Big Brother Big Sister Program
Background
Colorado’s Finest and Charles Hay have had a longstanding relationship for the last 10 years. Every week Colorado’s Finest has sent a group of ten students for 2 hours to work as big brothers and big sisters. These students have worked with individual teachers in music, art, technology and physical education. The benefits of the program have been extensive for both the elementary students and the high school students. Research shows that tutoring and mentoring across different ages helps all students academically, socially and raises self-esteem. We feel fortunate that Englewood students can benefit from such a program.
This Year 2011
In November and December we started a 6-week program. A group of volunteer high school students participate with elementary students at Charles Hay every day for 2 hours. These students are accompanied by Jana Horcham and Chris Anderson. Both teachers work at Colorado’s Finest and teach social studies and physical education. Chris Anderson has overseen the program for the last 10 years.
Goals: The program benefits both high school students and elementary students in a number of ways:
1. Elementary students get one on one instruction.
2. A greater variety of activities can be offered in gym class for the elementary students.
3. Students develop positive relationships and the program boosts self-esteem for all involved.
Team teaching – The teachers involved will collaborate and design engaging and meaningful activities for the students to address their physical education needs.
Behavior:
The high school students are held to the highest expectations and any behavior issues will be addressed immediately. The high school students are given training so that they know how to respond to situations that may arise at Charles Hay. The program is voluntary and the high school students are enthusiastic about having the opportunity to work with the younger students.
