Dear Vera,
We have been on this godforsaken island for 3 months now and the heat and flies are really getting to the men. We have been poorly supplied since the Navy lost for of its cruisers back in August. We have even been eating rations from World War 1, that’s 20 years ago! Our mission is to defend the airfield from the Japanese, but there are rumors that the Japanese are sending major reinforcements and we are really fearing for our lives. Our fearless leader Chesty has warned us that we will have to defend the line with not enough men and supplies. The other day we had to deal with a tremendous artillery barrage that killed dozens of my fellow marines. There were body parts scattered in the craters left from the bombs. I never imagined such horrors could happen but they have and it just seems to be getting worse. Our food has been contaminated with maggots and there is no fresh fruit or meat. However our lucked turned in our favor the other day when an Army regiment arrived on the island. During an air raid by the Japanese the army ran for cover leaving their supplies unprotected. We managed to pilfer fresh food and I even took cigars and moccasins from some Captain’s supply crate. I took the supplies back to the men in my squad and that night we feasted like there was no tomorrow.
Unfortunately tomorrow has arrived and we are now being told that we have to defend the line against a division of well-armed Japanese soldiers. We all fear for our lives but at this point I am almost resigned to death. I will be manning one of the heavy machine guns on the line and I fear a repeat of Alligator Creek where I gunned down hundreds of Japanese. Whether I survive will depend on the bravery of my fellow marines. We are expecting another banzai charge from the Japanese tonight and I fear I wont survive the night. Our commanding officer gave us Lucky Strikes which means we are really in trouble. Wish me luck.
All the best
